Walleteer Wednesday (Week 3).

Hellooo. Here I am: tired, but ready to blog. This week, we've got the hefty sum of 23 cents to spend. Now, reader, I know what you're thinking. With the current state of the economy, there's no way I could buy anything for 23 cents! But I am here to prove you wrong. Behold.

With 23¢, you could:

  • Put 1/15 gallon of gasoline into your car. That's 8.5 ounces, or a little more than one cup.

  • Buy 5.75 Haribo gummy bears (~4¢/bear).

  • Ride a 3-wheeled auto rickshaw in India for 1 hour.

  • Pay the tax on your purchase of this 2004 Kennedy half dollar.

  • Buy this handy dandy laminated card printed with the important holidays of 2008.

Whew, that was a hard one.

Goodbye for now. Leave some numbers!

Marauding Monday.

Sometimes I read things on other people's websites or blogs that I really want to share. So, I think, on Mondays, I'll post material that is not my own, but borrowed.

ma·raud
v.
to roam or go around in quest of plunder.

For today, I bring to you a selection of various similes from high school students' essays:

  • She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.
  • The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.
  • Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
  • John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.
  • The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.
And... my personal favorite:
  • He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

Happy Monday!

walleteer wednesday/spendthrift saturday.

OK, OK. Here we go. This week we've got $5.99 to spend. hm.

With $5.99 you could...

  • Buy one box of Quaker's Oats & Honey oatmeal. Or, if you're Melody, I suppose you could buy a box of the Oats, Honey, & Raisins type.

  • Run over to City Convenience and buy 39 individual Charleston Chews and freeze 'em (they taste the best frozen. Actually, MMM (my roommates!), there's a box of them in the freezer if you'd like!).

  • Buy your future daughter this obnoxious looking cheerleader PJ shirt (includes matching scrunchie!).

  • Buy a used, but like-new, copy of this classic CD:

  • If you play Guild Wars, you could buy 10 Vials of Dye (White). No, seriously. You actually pay someone real money in exchange for items in a game. Below is the listing and an excerpt from the game:

And so there you have it, folks. A wide array of purchases to make with 599 pennies. Stay tuned. I'll be on time next week. And don't forget to leave your numbers in the comments :)

Introducing… Walleteer Wednesdays

I was talking to a relative recently, and he suggested a grand idea for this blog. Why not, once a week, take a number… and see what kinds of things you could buy with that amount of money? I see potential for both creativity nd hilarity, so I thought it would make for a good weekly post. And so, I introduce to you… Walleteer Wednesdays!

Wal`let`eer´

n. One who carries a wallet; a foot traveler; a tramping beggar.

Today, we will start with a number that I choose. In the future, I’d like to start analyzing amounts that you all suggest. So, leave your numbers in the comments.

This week, we have $48,468 in our pockets. Think with me for a moment… what could you do with such an amount?

With $48,468, you could*:

  • Attend Boston University for one year (exactly).

  • Buy 194 ipods (80 GB classics).
  • Invest in Google (106 shares,$455 a pop)

  • Hop a plane (with 2 other friends) from Boston to Paris (fly first class, of course), take a bus to the Eiffel Tower, take the elevator up to the 2nd platform, and have a fancy dinner at the Jules Verne Restaurant. Then, take the bus back to the airport and fly back to Boston (first class).
  • Buy an expensive puppy (like a goldendoodle) and treat it like royalty for its entire lifetime (~15 years). Don't forget to build it a $10,000 dog house.

Interesting, no?

Stay tuned for next week, and don't forget to leave numbers in the comments section.

a semi-serious post

so i've been thinking a lot about what i want to do after i graduate from college. i know i want to stay in the field of psychology... but that's quite broad. there's social work, research, clinical psych, occupational psych, etc etc. people have been telling me i should work with kids, since apparently i'm "good at it". for a while i was thinking about getting into forensic/criminal psych, but the more i think about it, the more i feel that maybe i really am supposed to be working with kids. maybe all these experiences in children's/youth ministry will actually turn out to be ones that i can use in the future. i'll keep praying.

anyway, within child psychology, there are still many areas to be involved in. for me, i feel that i have a particular burden for those who have suffered from abuse. i was thinking about this, and i remembered this song by Martina McBride. it's called Concrete Angel. i've posted the video and lyrics below. so, if you've got the time, watch the MV and read through the words... and please pray for the many, many children who fall victim to abuse daily.

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain, she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out their light
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes, it'll be too late

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

it's not hard to see...

mm, so i wanted to post, but wasn't sure what i should post about this time around. but then, as i was snacking on my freeze-dried rambutans*, it hit me. i want to share with you the delight that fell upon me recently. while searching through my old music, i rediscovered this song--undoubtedly one of the best songs of the '90s. i provide you the video and the lyrics in hopes that you will find the same boundless joy that i have found.

You need to give it up
Had about enough
It's not hard to see
The boy is mine
I'm sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine

Brandy:
Think it's time we got this straight
Sit and talk face to face
There's no way you could mistake
Him for your man, are you insane

Monica:
See I know that you may be
Just a bit jealous of me
But you're blind if you can't see
That his love is all in me

Brandy:
See I tried to hesitate
I didn't want to say what he told me
He said without me he couldn't make
It through the day, ain't that a shame

Monica:
But maybe you misunderstood
Cause I can't see how he could
Wanna change something that's so good
All my love was all it took
(The boy is mine)

Chorus:
You need to give it up
Had about enough
It's not hard to see
The boy is mine
I'm sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine

Monica:
Must you do the things you do
You keep on acting like a fool
You need to know it's me not you
And if you didn't know it, girl, it's true

Brandy:
I think that you should realize
And try to understand why
He is apart of my life
I know it's killing you inside

Monica:
You can say what you wanna say
What we have you can't take
From the truth you can't escape
I can tell the real from the fake

Brandy:
When will you get the picture
You're the past, I'm the future
Get away, it's my time to shine
If you didn't know the boy is mine

Chorus:
You need to give it up
Had about enough
It's not hard to see
The boy is mine
I'm sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine

Monica:
You can't destroy this love I've found
Your silly games I won't allow
The boy is mine without a doubt
You might as well throw in the towel

Brandy:
What makes you think that he wants you
When I'm the one that brought him to
The special place that's in my heart
He was my love right from the start

(Monica) Give it on up
(Brandy) Had about enough
(Monica) It's not hard to see
(Brandy) The boy is mine oh ah...
(Monica) I'm sorry that you
(Brandy) Seem to be confused
(Monica) He belongs to me
(Brandy) No no. You need to give it up
(Monica) About enough
(Brandy) It's not hard to see
(Monica) The boy is mine
(Brandy) Mine...oh mine
(Monica) You seem to be confused
(Brandy) He belongs to me

(Monica) The boy is mine, not yours
(Brandy) But mine
(Monica) Not yours
(Brandy) But mine
(Monica) Not yours
(Brandy) But mine

I'm sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine
